USA Women vs Netherlands Women match preview where the two teams are standing
USA women
The five-time world champions kicked off their campaign with a thrilling 3-0 victory over Vietnam in Auckland.
Sophia Smith scored a brace in the first half to give her team a two-goal half-time lead, before Lindsey Horan scored in the 77th minute to seal the three points.
The USA went on a 10-game winning streak, scoring 24 goals and conceding only two.
They have also won 14 and drawn one of their previous 15 World Cup matches since losing on penalties to Japan in the 2011 final.
The United States are confident they can continue their strong form on Thursday, having lost only once of their 25 World Cup group stage matches.
Holland women
The Netherlands started their campaign with a narrow victory over Portugal thanks to Stephanie van der Graagt’s goal in the 13th minute.
After achieving its third consecutive victory, the Netherlands is preparing for a difficult test against the defending champions.
Since losing 2-0 to the United States in the 2019 World Cup Final, the Dutch have faced the Stars and Stripes on two occasions.
They lost in a friendly match in November 2020, before facing the United States in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics, but the match ended in a penalty shootout defeat.
While the Netherlands will be aware of the grueling test that awaits them on Thursday, they will at least be confident of disrupting the scorers after finding the net in six of their seven World Cup final group matches.
News from teams
After a successful start, US coach Vlatko Andonovski is expected to field an unchanged lineup for the second round.
Portland Thorns midfielder Horan earned a booking in the win over Vietnam, leaving one yellow card away from being suspended.
Alex Morgan failed to convert from a penalty kick in the first half of Saturday’s game, but he’ll have another chance to open the account when he’s in the front row on Thursday.
As for the opponent, Dutch coach Anders Junker can choose consistency and progression with an unchanged eleven players.
Dafne van Doumselaar will be tested in goal, who will be protected by three defenders Sherida Spizzi, Dominik Janssen and Van der Gragt.
Having scored 11 goals in 21 Serie A appearances for Juventus last year, Lenneth Berenstein will be looking to take his club’s form onto the international stage when he appears up front alongside Lake Martins.
