Apple has issued new guidance on how to properly dry wet iPhones, advising against the commonly used method of placing the device in a bag of rice. Experts have long warned that this technique may not be effective and could potentially harm the phone.
Instead, Apple suggests gently tapping out any liquid from the phone and leaving it to dry with the connector facing down. The tech giant also warns against using external heat sources or compressed air to dry wet phones, as well as inserting foreign objects like cotton swabs or paper towels.
Apple recommends leaving the wet phone in a dry area with airflow before reconnecting it to a charger. The company notes that newer smartphones, such as the iPhone 12 and onwards, are designed to withstand immersion up to six meters deep for up to half an hour.
As smartphones become more water-resistant, traditional methods of drying wet phones may become unnecessary according to Apple’s guidance. It is important for users to follow these recommendations to protect their devices and avoid causing further damage.
