Target Launches New Self-Checkout Policy to Limit Purchases
Target is shaking up the checkout experience for customers with a new self-checkout policy that limits purchases to 10 items. The retailer is rolling out “Express Self-Checkout” lanes at most of its 2,000 locations after a successful pilot program at 200 stores last fall.
The goal of the new policy is to speed up the checkout process and improve the overall customer experience. Target will also be opening more employee-staffed checkout lanes for customers with more than 10 items.
While self-checkout can be convenient, some studies have shown that it can lead to more customer theft. Additionally, customers may feel more loyal to a store and are more likely to revisit if they check out with a human cashier.
Reports of credit card skimmers being installed in retailers’ self-checkout lanes have also posed a financial risk to customers. As a result, other retailers, such as Walmart, are appearing to cool on self-checkout options as well. Although Walmart has not made any public announcements, some shoppers have reported self-checkout lines being closed at their local stores.
Overall, Target’s new self-checkout policy is aimed at creating a more efficient and secure shopping experience for customers. Time will tell if other retailers follow suit or if the trend towards self-checkout continues to evolve.
