Franco Morbidly was impressed with the old Yamaha M1 to take third in Petronas SRT and push his former teammate and MotoGP leader Fabio Quartararo to fourth, but the French jockey was interrupted on his last tour by traffic on the race line.
KTM showed a fresh renaissance with Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira snatching fifth and sixth spots in a row at the end of FP2, with the Austrian plant commissioning a new chassis that was tested in Jerez earlier this month.
Takaki Nakagami rode a Honda for the LCR in seventh, with Honda factory duo Mark Marquez at 12th and his teammate Paul Aspargaro in 13th place in the FP2 time.
Alex Espargaro scored his car in April through to eighth in the afternoon session ahead of successive winner Jack Miller at the Ducati Factory, as BRAMAC racer Johan Zarco finished in the top ten before defending MotoGP world champion Joan Mir in 11th place.
It was another tough day for Valentino Rossi, who endured two off-track moments in FP2, finishing the session at 21st for Petronas SRT.

What time do the Italian Motorcycle Qualifiers start?
Qualification for the Italian Speedway will begin at 13:10 GMT (14:10 local time), using the regular format of the Q1 and Q2 sessions. Qualification takes place right after the 30-minute FP4 session that begins at 12:30 GMT (13:30 local time).
The 10 fastest MotoGP contenders enter the merged FP1-2-3 program automatically in the second quarter, with the remaining Q1 contestants entering the playoffs. The fastest runners will advance in a 15-minute session from Quarter 1 to Quarter 2 to compete with the top 10 training runners. Q2, which also lasts for 15 minutes, decides who will take first place and the qualification order for the first four rows of the grid.
