The SailGP team from the US today revealed details regarding the roster of athletes, starting with announcing “approval” by Andrew Campbell, Cooper Dressler and Alex Sinclair.
US SailGP captain Jimmy Spethel wasted no time doing “pickups”, with all three new athletes from a 3-year campaign with America’s Cup competitor American Magic, who left the competition just over a week.
Twice America’s Cup winner Spithill said, “The winning team starts with the people you surround yourself with. Athletes like Andrew, Cooper and Alex bring a lot of experience to our team and we’re lucky to have them, but we’re not done yet. We look forward to announcing more team members in the coming weeks.”
The US team will strengthen its roster further in the coming weeks with the aim of benefiting the sport in the long term by creating a competitive and inclusive environment.
“Our goal is to create a roster that is competitive and represents the future of sport,” Spithill said. Much of this transforms the high standard of sports to create opportunities for female athletes and we have already begun to identify several female talents that could complement our list. In addition to these talks, we are also pleased to announce that this week we will launch an open process for female athletes applying to join the team. “
