In a statement released Tuesday, Nika and Marcus Johnson revealed that their son had a FaceTime call with his teammates.
The parents said, “We feel a lot of love and support from everyone, and we are extremely grateful for the care and attention the Keyontae have received over the past several days.”
Johnson’s parents traveled to Tallahassee to be with their son on Sunday, joining Florida coach Mike White and assistant sports director Dave Werner alongside Johnson, according to a statement from the team. On Monday, Johnson was transferred to UF Health in Gainesville where he was still listed in critical but stable condition.
It was not clear at this time the reason for his downfall.
Johnson, the team’s top scorer and rebound, has scored 19.7 points and 6 rebounds per game this season. He had 5 points before crashing, which after he left the field were led by his visibly shaken teammates and the coach gathered in prayer before playing resumed. Florida won the match 83-71.
Given the circumstances surrounding Johnson, Gators announced Tuesday that an agreement has been reached with the University of North Florida Ospreads to postpone the basketball game scheduled for Wednesday.
