The potential nomination would plunge the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate into the federal government, giving the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor of what many Democrats see as necessary experience if he is to run for president again.
Discussions about the relocation function are smooth and ongoing. Several Democrats have also been considered for the position, including former Chicago Mayor Ram Emanuel, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garsty, and Rhode Island Governor Gina Raymondo. Buttigieg has also been tied to a host of jobs in the Biden administration, including a UN ambassador, secretary of veterans affairs and secretary of commerce.
Bottega’s political aspirations aren’t a secret, but the former mayor’s future in his hometown of Indiana, the place he moved so far to the right over the past two decades, has long been an obstacle to those who charted his political rise.
Biden has long been raving about Bottegaage and there is a belief among senior Democrats that the president-elect wants to take the former mayor as a way to promote someone seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party.
Buttigieg would also be the first LGBTQ candidate to be nominated for the Biden administration, and if confirmed, would be the first LGBTQ cabinet secretary to be approved by the Senate.
