Daniel Cormier questions John Jones’ motives to vacate the belt

With Dominic Reyes out of the instant title picture, Daniel Cormier He believes fans can expect John Jones to return to the lighter weight.

Talking to ESPN On Monday, Cormer, former UFC Heavyweight and Lightweight Champion, discussed Jan Blaovi’s victory over Reyes at UFC 253 and Jones’s tweets since.

Cormer made a special exception from Jones who would have been hinting at a return to 205 pounds weeks after the title was vacated, describing his old rival as “out of reach”.

“This is very difficult,” said Cormer. He’s out of reach. It’s like, well, John, so why don’t you just go, ‘I was scared of Dominic Reyes. Now I want to go back to 205 and fight Jane Blauchowicz because he defeated Dom? That’s insane. I mean, who does.’ Who does that?

It could have been him and Reyes (Saturday). It was supposed to be him and Reyes. Instead, he ditched the belt. He ditched the belt and said, “I want to fight heavyweight.” Maybe I’ll come back? “How can you be so far from communicating? I don’t understand.”

Despite this, Cormer said it would be smart for Jones to return to the light heavyweight and fight Blachowicz. If that battle happened, Cormer expects Jones to win. He said speed and durability are two different factors.

“(Blachowicz) is very slow to beat (Jones),” Cormer said. “The thing about Jones is that people don’t realize he has a good chin. You can hit him. You hit him. A lot of us hit him. He can take the punches. If Jan Blachowicz is out and he’s so slow, Jones will recognize him. Oh God, I don’t believe it. See that. If I’m still fighting at 205 or if I’m still fighting today and I said, “DC, you can fight Jan Blachowicz,” Maybe I’ll fight Jan Blachowicz. No disrespect, just because I think … It’s surprising, right?

“When you have footage of people getting old victories over him, you think you can do it too. Any fighter does. If you are a guy like me or gay then you definitely think you can beat him. That’s why Jones will go to fight him.”

Jones, 33, has not contested since his February 2020 win over Reyes at UFC 247. After a wage dispute with UFC President Dana White, Jones vacated his 205-pound title in mid-August. He has since announced that he will move into heavyweight for his next fight – although he has hinted at his interest in a 205-pound return, too.
