Pope meets Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi – Chronicle

Pope Francis met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Vatican. The meeting lasted about an hour. The pontiff received Modi at Sala del Tronetto, in the Apostolic Palace, at 8.25 am and the conversation continued until 9.20 am. The Pope gave the Indian prime minister a bronze slab reading “The desert will become a garden” and some of the Pope’s documents, including this year’s Message for Peace and the Document on Human Fraternity. Modi gave the Pope a silver candlestick and a folder on the country’s commitment to the environment.

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, after meeting the Pope, met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Monsignor. Paul R. Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States. “In the course of a short conversation – the Holy See’s report on Modi’s meeting at the Foreign Ministry – we focused on the friendly relations between the Holy See and India.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Pope Francis to visit India. Modi himself wrote on Twitter: “I had an intimate meeting with Pope Francis. I had the opportunity to discuss various topics with him and invited him to come to India.”
