The Olympics are almost here after a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here is all the news about the athletes of the US swimming team in Tokyo 2020.
USA Swimming Tokyo 2020: Who are the athletes to watch?
Swimming, one of the most popular Olympic events, is back with many new faces. 35 of Team USA’s 53 members will make their Olympic debut this summer, taking to the field to fill in the gaps left by Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, who have collected 40 medals (29 gold) at five Olympic Games. There will be three new events this year, including the first mixed swimming event: the men’s 800m freestyle, the women’s 1500m freestyle and the 4x100m mixed relay.
Veterans to watch
Katie Ledecky
One of the biggest stars not only in the pool but also in the Tokyo Games, 24-year-old Ledecky will be competing in her third Olympics and likely to join her medal pool. In 2016, she was the most decorated player with four gold medals (two of them in world record time) and one silver.
Lily King (Rana)
King has won two golds in Rio and has not lost in the 100m breaststroke since 2015.
Alison Schmidt (freestyle)
Eight-time Olympic medalist Schmidt is the eighth American swimmer to qualify for four Olympics.
Ryan Murphy (Dorso)
Murphy won gold in the 100m and 200m backstroke in Rio and will defend his titles in Tokyo. American men have won both events in six consecutive Olympic Games, dating back to 1996 in Atlanta.
New swimming stars for Team USA Tokyo 2020
35 of Team USA’s 53 members will compete in their first Olympics, but the rookies have plenty of experience heading to Tokyo. Eleven teen swimmers will still start the games, including 15-year-old Katie Grimes (800m freestyle), the youngest swimmer to qualify from Ledecky in 2012.

Tori Husky (flavored)
Hosk has not only won the 100-meter butterfly at the US Olympic Trials, but also set a time record in the United States and the Americas.
Michael Andrew (freestyle, breaststroke, M)
The 22-year-old qualified for a series of events in practice, winning the 200m IM and 100m breaststroke and finishing second in the 50m freestyle to book his ticket to Tokyo.
Reagan Smith (back, butterfly)
At just 19, Smith qualified for two events in Tokyo: the 100m backstroke and the 200m butterfly. She won gold in the 200m backstroke at the 2019 World Championships and is the current world record holder, but did not qualify in the event after finishing third in practice.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær won’t hold back anyone who wants to play the Olympics
