Women may experience greater health advantages from regular exercise compared to men – National Institutes of Health (NIH)

A recent study supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has found that women may derive more health benefits from regular exercise compared to men. The observational study revealed that even when women and men engage in the same amount of physical activity, women have a lower risk of premature death.

Despite the proven benefits of exercise, the study highlighted that only 33% of women and 43% of men met the standard for weekly aerobic exercise, with even fewer individuals completing weekly strength training sessions. The researchers emphasized the importance of regular exercise, noting that even a limited amount of physical activity can provide significant health benefits, particularly for women.

The study emphasized the significance of individualized exercise routines, as physical activity needs and goals may differ based on age, health status, and schedule. The differences in outcomes between men and women were attributed to various factors such as anatomy and physiology, with women potentially facing additional respiratory, metabolic, and strength demands during exercise.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend adults to engage in at least 2.5-5 hours of moderate-intensity exercise or 1.25-2.5 hours of vigorous exercise per week, in addition to strength-based activities. The findings underscore the value of regular exercise for overall health and well-being, with the research partially supported by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

NHLBI is a prominent organization leading research on heart, lung, and blood diseases, while NIH serves as the primary federal agency conducting and supporting medical research.
