Famed playlist singer and Padma Award winner SP Balasubrahmanyam, or popularly SPB or Balu in the cinema world who has recorded more than 40,000 songs in 16 languages over five decades, died, lost his battle against Covid-19 and died early Friday, his son said SPCharan .
Speaking briefly to media outside MGM Healthcare, Charan said Balasobrhmaniam passed away at 1.04 p.m. and thanked hospital officials for the treatment and service.
He said more details would be released at a later time.
Since Thursday, the indications have not been good.
MGM Healthcare said Thursday the singer is still on ECMO and other life support systems.
“His condition has deteriorated significantly in the past 24 hours which calls for maximum life support and is very critical. The team of experts at MGM Healthcare are closely monitoring his health,” the hospital said.
Since Friday morning, a large number of police have been deployed outside the hospital.
All members of the singer’s family were present at the hospital.
The famous director, Bharatraga, after visiting Balasubrahmaniyam in the hospital, told the media at this sad time that he could not speak anything.
“Even now there is a glimmer of hope. There is one strength above all of us,” Bharatraja said.
Film director Venkat Prabha was the first to tweet about the singer’s death.
Prabhu tweeted “#RIPSPB 1:04 PM” announcing the sad news.
On August 5, in a Facebook post, the 74-year-old SPB said he was having a very mild bout of coronavirus and had taken himself to hospital for rest.
He said that although doctors advised him to stay home and rest, he decided to stay in the hospital, as his family members at home would be anxious.
He was hoping to be discharged from the hospital in two days. But it wasn’t to be.
