US President Joe Biden’s administration said a new plan to be announced on Thursday would allow 30,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela to enter the United States legally each month for the next two years. At the same time, the plan provides for a stricter crackdown on illegal entry from Mexico or by sea. Indeed, in the past period, the increase in the number of immigrants trying to enter the United States every day and the subsequent criticism from the Republican Party has become an increasingly urgent political issue for Biden.
Under the new rules, citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela will be able to apply for entry to the United States online while in their home country. To obtain the visa, they will have to prove that they have someone to sponsor them, pass a security check and pay for the trip to the United States. Since taking office, Biden has often said he wants to reform the laws governing immigration in the United States – which are based on very strict rules introduced by his predecessor Donald Trump – but that hasn’t happened for now.
