Railways announces investments of 20 billion in Sicily: here is the planned work

Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group presented its industrial plan 2022-2031 that provides more than 190 billion in investments with an impact on the national economy estimated at 2-3 percentage points of GDP.

The contents were outlined this morning in Rome, at a conference open to colleagues and journalists, by the President, Nicoletta Giadrossi, and General Manager Luigi Ferraris. The plan provides for a profound redefinition of judgment And a new organizational structure that brings together the subsidiaries of FS into four business poles: “Infrastructure”, “Passenger”, “Logistics” and “Urban”.

In Sicily, the Industrial Plan 2022-2031 provides for a total investment of more than 20 billion euros which will fall between the four different poles: the resources that will design a renewable mobility scenario – the railways but also the road – that is more interconnected, integrated and sustainable.

    Infrastructure Center

The resources allocated to the Infrastructure Center constitute the main part of the total investment: 19.58 billion euros. 13.8 billion euros allocated to railway infrastructure. With a total economic investment of about 9.3 billion euros, the most important intervention is the new Palermo-Catania-Messina express connection, which responds to the medium and long-term needs of public rail transport, improving regularity, redundancy and multimodal development. Other interventions include those related to the Palermo Junction (Basanti and Anello), the Catania Junction and the modernization of the Fontanarossa Airport connection, the restoration and electrification of Palermo Trapani via the Milo line, Caltagirone – Gila, the Augusta bypass, and the reinforcement of the Palermo-Agrigento-Porto Empedocle line, the connection to Trapani Bergi Airport.

On the other hand, the resources allocated to road infrastructure amount to 5.78 billion euros: among the main interventions are the Ragusa-Catania connection, state road 121 intersection of the Palermo-Bologna roundabout, state road 626 to complete the Gila ring road, state road 284 Adrano-Apoe.

    Basinger Polo

On the other hand, €403 million has been allocated to the “Passenger Hub” in the railway sector, which translates to more new trains dedicated to regional transport and the enhancement of day and night long-distance services to and from Sicily.

    urban pole

For “Polo Urbano” regeneration interventions and urban multi-modal and logistics solutions, about 2.5 million square meters of areas are planned to be developed with an investment of 3.7 million on assets. The main projects will be allocated to the regions of Palermo, Syracuse, Catania and Messina.

    logistics hub

With a total investment of about 860 million euros, the resources allocated to the “Logistics Center” are aimed at the extraordinary maintenance of the Catania Aquichilla (360 million euros) and Catania Bicoca (500 million euros) complexes. It is expected that new connections will be expanded and developed, which will lead to an increase in sales volumes of approximately 61% (2031 vs 2022) of traditional services, in particular the steel sector. On the other hand, multimodal services double, going from about 5.2 million euros in 2022 to about 11.1 million in 2031, which corresponds to more than 700 trains / year, with an increase in turnover of about 114%.
