Kenya: a boat capsizes and at least 6 Italian tourists are missing – Africa

A cruise boat with about 40 people on board, including Italian tourists, as well as several Kenyans, capsized on the high seas this morning off one of Kenya’s most popular beaches, the tourist resort of Watamu. At least according to testimonies collected by ANSA, an unknown number of Kenyans drowned while the Italians made it ashore on other boats. Six Italian tourists have not returned yet, but they should be on another tour boat.

Guido Bertone, general manager of Garuda Resort, told ANSA that the six Italian tourists will be on another boat sailing to see dolphins. The honorary consulate of Malindi urgently did its best to check the health condition of the rescued Italians thanks to a rescue quickly brought in by the Kenya Wildlife Service rangers. Some of them have been treated at health facilities in Watamu and Malindi and are not in serious condition.

“Others we treated, they were in shock and had only minor bruises,” Bertoni said. “From the hotel we saw the boat that was capsizing
I hit a freak wave. Nothing like this has happened in Watamu before.”
