In Spain, there is a fear of going to the hairdresser. It’s all wrong with ringworm, which is an infectious disease that spreads very quickly. Dermatologists sounded the alarm: It’s a real breakout. There will be at least 107 confirmed cases already. Furthermore, since 2021 there has been a vertical increase in fungal infections of the scalp as reported in the study published in Actas Dermo-Sifiliograficas.
What is ringworm and why does it spread so quickly?
Ringworm is a highly contagious disease. Basically it is a fungus that mainly affects children from the age of six months to 12 years. Symptoms of infection include itching, scaling of the area, hair loss, and sometimes inflammation, vomiting, pain, or fever.
Still searching for the cause of the outbreak. The disease is also very common because they – especially young people – go to the hairdresser more often than in the past. Moreover, the type of cut adopted in this period also plays its role: “sizing” (hence also the double cut) or shaved on the nape of the neck. Factors that “could have contributed to the spread of ringworm through infected electric razors.” Thus, the key is hygiene for hairdressers. “It is possible that contaminated shaving materials may be shared between different clients of some hairdressers who do not consider material disinfection standards.”

How to avoid infection
Infection occurs by direct contact between the spores of the fungus and the scalp of an infected person. Why focus attention on electric shavers, which have been identified as the cause of the outbreak, and prevention is a critical factor here as well. As soon as the first signs are detected, it is advisable to go to a dermatology clinic to confirm the diagnosis and be able to establish a treatment that exists specifically for this fungus and is very effective.
