(ANSA) – SYDNEY, May 19 – Australian doctor Kenneth Elliott, 88, has been freed seven years after he was kidnapped by jihadists in Burkina Faso. The Canberra government announced it today.
Elliott and his wife were kidnapped by al-Qaeda-linked terrorists in January 2016. His wife, Jocelyn, was released the following month. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong told reporters that Jarrah had gone home last night. “Dr. Elliott is safe and has been reunited with his wife, Jocelyn, and their children,” Wong said. “I am so happy that he has been released and that he is safe with his family again,” she added. The jihadist group Ansar al-Din claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of the couple. In July 2017, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI) released a video showing six hostages, including Kenneth Elliott. (handle).
