Smashing pumpkinsFrameman Billy Corgan Talk with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about Chicago’s alternative rock recombination for a new album and the evolving state of the pop mainstream.
Kurgan listed the musical influences that tended to rock David BowieAnd AirshipAnd Black Sabbath And the Beatles, But he appreciates how he loves pop stars Halsey And Lady Gaga Tending to other genres in “The Music World I Dreamed Of”.
“I think the good news is that we are now in, or entered into, the world of music that you dreamed of. It’s that you hear pop artists like Halsey doing almost alternate songs. You see Gaga doing a country album,” Kurgan said of their production. “I mean, artists have to explore space, and if they’re talented enough, they have to be able to do that. If they’re not, that’s okay too.”
Although the 53-year-old star contemplates his dreamy world of music, he is not yet perfect. The split in US politics that particularly intensified before the November 3 election represents a historic tension that Kurgan has spoken of since the 1990s when The Smashing Pumpkins appeared on the cover of Melody Maker.
“That was a long, long building story. And we have a tremendous opportunity now to get together and build some kind of an ideal world, a perfect music world, an ideal art world, an ideal world for everyone to fulfill their dream,” he added. “Or we could go on and repeat the history books I’ve read as well where weird and strange things end up happening.”
