Very sorry for the boss: “I wish I could have ended this adventure in a different way”
The news of Dave Rainey’s dismissal immediately caught many fans and insiders by surprise. Despite the difficulties, the manager’s position seemed quite stable at least until the World Cup: the presence of Eddie Jones free and available must have clearly changed the plans for Australian rugby, which decided on an abrupt change 9 months before the World Cup.
The now former Wallabies coach spoke to the press for the first time after his dismissal: “I’ve had over 500 letters from players, former players, coaches, managers and friends. The support has been tremendous and I really appreciate it.”

“I’ve loved every moment with Australia: they’re exceptional guys, young and ready to work hard. The staff I’ve worked with are some of the best in the world, and they’ve been instrumental in the evolution of this group.”
“In particular – continues Rainey – I must thank the Australian fans for their support of the team these three years, and for all the words of encouragement we have received at schools, training camps and airports, wherever we are.”
“I’m sorry I can’t complete my contract the way I wanted to, but I’m leaving knowing I have the full support of the group and play. We’ve certainly made tremendous progress in the last three years, thanks to the hard work of the good people.”
“I wish Eddie, the staff and the team all the best,” concludes Dave Rainey.
