The deal will allow UK driving license holders who are residents of Italy to apply to have their driving license exchanged for an Italian one. The agreement also provides for the replacement of licenses that expired 5 years ago, those that are lost and stolen.
Ambassador Llewellyn commented that it was “great news for British citizens in Italy”.
The agreement is “the result of complex negotiations”, signed thanks to “close cooperation with Italian colleagues, reflecting the deep relations that bind our two countries”.
He added: “We are now working with the Italian government to bring the agreement into force as soon as possible, after ratification by both parties. In the meantime, we are making arrangements with the Italian authorities to ensure that UK licenses after 31 December 2022 will continue to be recognized for a further 12 months.” The measure, the latter, is already included in the Melbrogue Ordinance approved by the government in recent days.
