Measles cases rose 79% globally last year, WHO says. Experts explain why.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning about the rapid spread of measles worldwide, citing a 79% increase in cases from 2022. With over 306,000 reported cases last year, the WHO is anticipating a rise in measles-related deaths in 2023.

In the United States, a Florida school district is on high alert after four confirmed cases were reported at Manatee Bay Elementary School. Experts are concerned that more cases could follow, highlighting the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of measles.

The declining vaccination rates in the U.S. have put herd immunity at risk, with more than 8,500 schools falling below the 95% vaccination threshold needed to protect communities from measles outbreaks. Scientists and doctors are alarmed by the drop in vaccination rates, noting clusters of measles cases in Philadelphia and Ohio in recent years.

The WHO is predicting that more than half of all countries in the world will be at high or very high risk of measles outbreaks by the end of 2024. This forecast makes the coming year especially challenging for global health authorities in their efforts to control the spread of the highly contagious disease.

As measles continues to pose a significant threat to public health, it is critical for individuals to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations to protect themselves and their communities.
