The benchmarks show how Windows ARM hardware can compare to the M1 Mac

We already know its new M1-powered Macs Impressive performance It outperforms nearly all current Macs with Intel processors, but what about Windows PCs? Computer world Compare Microsoft’s Surface Pro X with Apple’s new MacBook Air M1, and the results place the Surface tablet behind the Mac.

Although Windows runs on ARM-based devices, not many of them are currently available to consumers. Microsoft’s Surface Pro X Tablet is one such device – with an ARM chip built in partnership between Microsoft and Qualcomm.

As indicated Computer worldOne of the big limitations of Windows to ARM devices was that the operating system was restricted to running the emulated 32-bit X86 program. In other words, the system was not able to emulate and run 64-bit applications built for AMD and Intel processors.

32-bit software runs significantly less – and Apple got rid of it in 2019 with macOS Catalina. At the same time, Apple introduced Rosetta 2 for the new M1 Macs, which basically translates every software built for Intel Macs into an ARM dual that works best on Apple’s silicon-based computers.

Microsoft recently released a beta version of Windows that features emulation of 64-bit X86 software, but performance still isn’t close to that of new Macs with the M1 chip. In Geekbench 5 testing, the new M1 MacBook Air outperformed the Surface Pro X and was also ranked behind a cheap HP Pavilion laptop powered by an Intel Core i5 processor.

Another test was done using HandBrake, which is an open source video conversion program. While the new M1 chip MacBook Air converted a 12-minute 4K video to 1080p H.265 format in about 23 minutes, the Surface Pro X ARM took two hours to complete the same process.

The SQ1 plays at roughly frames per second, and it takes about 2 hours to convert a 12-minute 4K video, Tears of Steel, to 1080p H.265 format. Apple’s MacBook M1 simply blows the Surface Pro X.

At the end of the day, even with the improvements Microsoft made to Windows, ARMs are at a disadvantage compared to the M1 Macs. Based on her tests, Computer world He says “Windows on Arm needs a miracle” to achieve the performance of the new Macs with the Apple Silicon chip.

But it’s hard to believe that further development will bridge the massive performance gap between Windows on Arm and Apple’s M1-powered devices. Within six months, Microsoft may be able to boast that the simulation performance has improved significantly. But without the built-in miracle of a much better CPU than Qualcomm or another Arm chipset maker and constant improvements from Microsoft, the future of Windows on Arm looks bleak.

Interestingly enough, the developers were able to Emulating Windows 10 on M1 Macs The Mac scored better in Geekbench testing than the Surface Pro X running Windows 10 natively on ARM.
