Turandot, which was staged at the Royal Opera House in London, will be shown in cinemas on March 22: here is the trailer for the event.
The Royal Opera House announces that next March, audiences around the world will be able to experience Giacomo Puccini’s latest opera, Turandot. Indeed, on Wednesday, March 22 at 20.15, Andrei Serban’s production will be broadcast live in cinemas around the world.
Serban’s stunning and soulful 1984 overture is now a classic opera and draws on Chinese and Italian theatrical traditions to evoke a vision of ancient China steeped in myth and fantasy. Puccini’s music is full of musical wonders – not least the instantly recognizable “Nessun Dorma” – and delivers unforgettable melodies and moments of high drama.
For the live broadcast, Antonio Pappano will direct an international cast that includes Anna Peruzzi as Princess Turandot; Yonghoon Lee as Calaf; Masabani; Cecilia Rangwanacha as Leo; and Vitali Koalgo as Timur.
At Princess Turandot’s court, suitors who fail to solve her riddles are brutally murdered. But when a mysterious prince answers the riddles correctly, all of the power is suddenly concentrated in his hands. When life hangs in the balance, can love conquer all?
Since 2008, the Royal Opera House’s film program has brought opera and ballet to audiences around the world. For the 2022/23 season, no fewer than 13 Royal Ballet and Royal Opera performances will be shown in over 1,300 cinemas from the UK to New Zealand. Each broadcast offers the audience the best seat and includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and insights. The program is an integral part of the Royal Opera House’s plan to expand its audience and continue to contribute to the revival of cinema, both nationally and internationally.
