Following the growth of public concerts in London during the 18th century, which often featured the latest works, a group of members of the aristocracy started a new concert series called the Concert of Ancient Music. The term “early music”, denoting music written at least twenty years ago, has been the main focus of this series and a great deal of Handel’s work is presented.
The exhibition takes place in Foundling Museum From January 13 to October 8, 2023.
King George III attended the concerts, which is why they became known as ‘The King’s Concerts’. The king was a big fan of Handel’s music, and for this reason, he ordered a staging of Christ once a year for the benefit of the Royal Society of Musicians.
This exhibition takes a look at the repertoire, performers and pioneers of this prestigious musical series that took place in the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibition features some of the most famous composers in history such as Handel, Geminiani and Corelli. There are also many other artists’ photos included in it.
Items such as a catalog of artists’ performances and payments, as well as letters, tickets, and concert programs that have benefited from the patronage of the King and other members of the royal family, are examples of things that are rarely seen.
