Pixel 4a October update fixes auto brightness and touchscreen

this is Security patch for the month It is the first release after Android 11 and – as usual – includes a slew of bug fixes. The October update addresses two major problems with the Pixel 4a, while all other devices benefit as well.

Google says it improved the touch sensitivity on the Pixel 4a when using the screen protector, while also addressing “auto brightness response in certain lighting conditions”. The latter is likely to relate to a budget phone which uses an ambient light sensor under the display. For the first time for Google devices, this was an issue that early reviewers especially encountered. Meanwhile, touchscreen issues have been a more prevalent problem among some users.

Bugs have also been fixed with auto rotation on Pixel 3-4a, while remaining fixes for all currently supported devices (Pixel 2 and above):

  • Fix for some devices stuck during boot up
  • Fix to prevent accidental deactivation of call notifications
  • Fix missing auto-rotate icon in device specific directions
  • Fix for undetected swipe gestures in launcher

This last issue was particularly annoying on Android 11, and it led to Pixel Launcher showing an introductory prompt on how to swipe up as users kept “missing”. Meanwhile, the spin continues to pick up some polish. The first issue was not particularly prevalent, while the second issue was somewhat strange.

The October security patch is rolling out now on previous Pixel 4a and Pixel devices. You can wait for OTA or Download it manually today.
