(ANSA) – ROME, Dec. 15 – During the pandemic, Amazon has helped fund the disinformation activities of various US non-purge groups through its thousands of dollars charitable program. The Washington Post revealed this after analyzing the e-commerce giant’s tax documents.
In essence, through AmazonSmile, which donates 0.005 of every purchase made to a customer-selected organization, more than $40,000 has been donated to groups that provided misinformation about the vaccination campaign. This is a small number compared to the more than $60 million Amazon donates each year to NGOs of all kinds and yet it has the potential to cause “significant damage to the ability of these entities to spread false news via social networks,” asserts Imran Ahmed. CEO from the Center for Combating Digital Hate, an organization that combats misinformation about vaccines.
Amazon spokeswoman Stacey Keeler responded to the Washington Post with a note indicating that while the company encourages its employees to get vaccinated, it will continue to fund organizations that do not depend on vaccination. (Dealing).
