Britain awarded BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce Holdings 85 million pounds ($117 million) each to work on a new generation of nuclear submarines, the day after an agreement was announced to supply the units to the United Kingdom.

The funding will support 350 jobs and likely lay the foundation for the Australian project, which will see the Canberra government reject an existing deal for diesel submarines from France.
Rolls has been the sole supplier of engines to Britain’s nuclear submarine fleet for over 60 years, while BAE manufactures both hunter and killer submarines such as those pursued by Australia as well as Dreadnought-class nuclear-armed ships.
Companies including Babcock International Group are working with Britain’s Ministry of Defense to confirm plans for a range of options for a new nuclear-powered submarine known as the nuclear replacement for a submersible vessel.
The BAE contract will retain about 250 jobs at the Barrow-in-Furness shipyard in England, while 100 jobs at Rolls in Derby will be supported in nuclear power development and manufacturing.
