It was announced at 12 noon today (Saturday 8 May), in the press room of the Vatican, the news of the appointment of Monsignor Aldo Giordano as the Apostolic Ambassador of the European Union in Brussels.
Originally from the San Benigno region of Cuneo, 67 years old, Mgr Giordano, the current Apostolic Ambassador to CaracasIn recent years, on behalf of Pope Francis, he has undertaken a delicate task of mediating with leader Nicolas Maduro, Hugo Chavez’s successor. Since 2008, he has participated internationally in representative positions on behalf of the Catholic Church. From July 2008 to October 2013 as a permanent observer of the Vatican at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and then Ambassador of Venezuela. On 14 December 2013, he was ordained a bishop in Cuneo by Monsignor Pietro Parolin.
The return of Monsignor Giordano to Europe was also expected due to his great experience in the problems of the old continent. Monsignor Giordano has served since 1995 in St. Gallen, Switzerland, as the secretary of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences, a body that includes all European bishops. Very involved in the field of the ecumenical movement, he worked closely with the principal exponents of the Reformed Churches and the Orthodox and Evangelical communities.
