6 Ultra-Processed Foods Nutritionists Say You Should Toss Out Now

Research has shown that the consumption of ultra-processed foods can have detrimental effects on our health. These foods, which are typically high in salt, refined sugars, fats, and controversial lab-based ingredients, have been linked to various health issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

Nutritionist Rob Hobson strongly advises against including sugary breakfast cereals, processed meats, chips, processed cheese slices, soda, and pre-packaged pastries in our diets. Sugary breakfast cereals like Cocoa Puffs, Reese’s Puffs, and Krave are likened to pudding and are easy to overconsume due to their high sugar content.

Hobson also warns against excess consumption of deli meats like ham and salami, which have been associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. When it comes to chips, opting for plain, salted varieties is a better choice compared to flavored chips that contain additives.

In order to make healthier choices, Hobson suggests replacing processed cheese slices with real cheese options such as cheddar, feta, and brie. Additionally, fizzy drinks can have a negative impact on gut bacteria and glucose tolerance, so it is recommended to opt for sparkling water with added fruit, veggies, or herbs instead.

Lastly, pre-packaged pastries that are high in saturated fat and sugar often contain emulsifiers that contribute to their long shelf life. Being mindful of the ingredients in these foods and making conscientious choices can help individuals improve their overall health and well-being.
