A Department of Justice spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday that hackers who exploited government networks through SolarWinds have gained access to about 3% of DOJ email accounts, but there is no indication that they have accessed classified systems.
The CIO’s Office of the Department of Justice learned of the hack on Christmas Eve, according to the statement, as agents accessed the department’s Microsoft Office 365 email environment.
“As part of its ongoing technical analysis, the ministry has decided that the activity constitutes a major accident under the Federal Information Security Update Act, and is taking steps consistent with this decision,” the spokesman said. “The department will continue to notify the appropriate federal agencies, Congress, and the public as necessary.”
