A Norovirus Outbreak Hits Colgate University Campus
Colgate University in upstate New York is currently grappling with a gastrointestinal illness outbreak that has affected at least 15 students on campus. Two students have already tested positive for Norovirus, a highly contagious virus that spreads easily through close contact and contaminated surfaces.
In addition to the confirmed cases, there are 54 suspected cases under investigation by university health officials. The majority of these cases have been linked to social events both on and off campus.
The university is working closely with the Madison County Public Health department to identify and slow the spread of the illness. This collaboration comes in the wake of reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicating that Norovirus outbreaks are impacting communities nationwide.
The prevalence of this gastrointestinal illness isn’t limited to just Colgate University, as reports of similar cases have also been on the rise in Madison County schools and hospitals.
Individuals who have experienced symptoms are encouraged to self-report to Madison County Public Health, as this information will be crucial in helping health officials understand the scope of the outbreak and prevent further spread.
As the situation continues to develop, students and staff at Colgate University are being urged to practice good hygiene habits, such as frequent handwashing and staying home if they feel unwell. By taking these precautions, the hope is that the spread of Norovirus can be contained and the affected individuals can recover swiftly.
