The Institute of Contemporary Art – ICA Boston is commissioner of the American Pavilion at the 59th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The pavilion displays the work of the American artist Simon Lee In cooperation with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State.
Lee’s sculptural work (Chicago, 1967) revolves around themes such as history, race, gender, work, and monuments, creating powerful narratives about women of color, their work, and their resilience. For the Venice Biennale of Art, Simone Lee has created a series of figurative sculptures in bronze and ceramics, blending cultural languages ​​and overlapping references to 19th-century West African art, the material culture of early Black Americans and colonial history for international exhibitions.
