The US Senate confirmed the appointment of Anthony Blinken as Secretary of State (a role similar to that of the Secretary of State), by 78 votes to 22 against. Blinken was one of them US President Joe Biden announced the first six appointments Shortly after his election.
Anthony Blinken is 58 years old and has been a friend and confidant of Joe Biden for over twenty years. He served on Biden’s staff as a member of the Senate, was his national security advisor as vice president, and then transferred to deputy national security advisor to Barack Obama when he was president. Between 2015 and 2017, he was the Deputy Secretary of State, also under Obama. Blinken is seen as a centrist and pragmatist, intent on restoring and strengthening traditional alliances of the United States, which have been weakened by Donald Trump’s presidency. Designated National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, along with Blinkin, led Biden’s foreign policy team during the election campaign. The two are friends and share an ideology and worldview. Sullivan served on Joe Biden’s homeland security team as vice president, then became one of Hillary Clinton’s most-listened advisors while she was Secretary of State.
