CVS and Walgreens are launching COVID-19 vaccines across long-term care facilities in California starting Monday. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state has chosen a federal pharmacy partnership where workers with CVS and Walgreens administer Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to residents and employees in long-term care facilities at no cost to the state or local governments. CVS will provide vaccinations for 499 skilled nursing facilities as part of the program’s first term, Newsom said. Walgreens will be conducting vaccinations for 357 facilities, and last week CVS announced that the pharmacy chain has the capacity to vaccinate nearly 700,000 residents and employees at more than 15,000 facilities in California. Nationwide, CVS plans to immunize 40 million employees and on-site residents in long-term care facilities. “Long-term care facilities had an opportunity to either use CVS Health or Walgreens. “Or maybe they choose not to participate in and use the state program,” said Joe Wessel, regional director for the CVS Health Bay Area region, last week. CVS launched its program in long-term care facilities in 12 states last week. They will begin vaccinating long-term care facilities in thirty states, including California, as well as Washington, D.C., starting Monday. “We will visit each site three different times,” explained Wiesel. We’ll go there for the first dose, and then we’ll follow up about three weeks later if we’re using the Pfizer vaccine. And then we’ll go one last time to make sure we don’t lose anyone in that facility. ”CVS said this is a prelude to a larger launch. Ultimately, COVID-19 vaccines will be offered in pharmacies. They hope they will be available to the general public around March. It will start as appointments only. Once things get to scale, CVS said it will be able to deliver 25 to 50 million rounds every month. Vaccines are free. Those who recover from COVID-19 need to wait for their isolation period to end, according to CDC standards. That said, CVS said there are no specific restrictions on immunization if you recover from COVID-19. CVS explained that reinfection is uncommon for about 90 days.
